Saturn to be visible without rings

inset-saturn-rings-largeSaturn will be seen without rings from Monday. The rings of the planet will be tilted edge-on to the earth, making it impossible for them to see even through a telescope. This rare phenomenon only occurs every 14 to 15 years.

‘Saturn is going through a phase called ‘ring crossing’ when its rings become aligned just along our line of sight and are therefore becoming difficult to see. Something like this was first noticed around 400 years ago when Galileo first turned his telescope towards Saturn,’ said director, Nehru Planetarium, Dr Rathnasree, on Sunday.

She said: ‘These rings keep tilting in different directions as viewed from Earth due to changing geometry as Saturn moves around the sun. Sometimes, the geometry is very favourable - the rings appear face on and appear spread out and clearly visible. This had happened in 2000.’

‘Since then the view of Saturn’s rings has been slowly tilting towards us in such a way that they are now visible almost edge-on,’ she added. According to Dr Sandeep Sahijpal, physics department, Panjab University: ‘Among the four outer giant planets in the solar system, Saturn has the most prominent ring system. The entire ring structure is confined to almost a single orbital plane with an average thickness of approximately few tens of meters. The ring structure extends from approximately 6,500 to 2,00,000 km above the Saturn’s equator,’ he said.

He added: ‘After every 14.7 years the ring system makes a zero degree angle with respect to us. Since the ring system is extremely thin, the entire system becomes invisible during this period when viewed so far away from the planet. This happens after every 14.7 years.’

‘Over the next month, we are going to witness the missing ring system as we will be viewing the ring almost edge-on. During this period the entire ring system will be aligned almost along the orbit of the Saturn. Over the next couple of weeks in August 2009, the inclination angle of ring system with respect to us will gradually reduce. It will become exactly zero around September 4. The ring system will subsequently reappear gradually,’ he said.

Device for Visually challenged people

Visually handicapped people are facing difficulties to perform everyday communications. Sometimes, bad eye sight occurs to many people for reduced self confidence due to not being able to perform independently. This is an innovative concept device that will help visually handicapped people when they are in a mobile situation.

This electronic device is combined with a speech synthesis and a digital camera with a shape of a traditional product. The speech synthesis is able to decode texts to voice streams and the screen can be used as a magnification in conditions when the speech synthesis is not working. One good example of such situations is when a visual handicapped person wants to illuminate for instance images or illustrations which can be portrayed in endless ways. This device comprises a bendable OLED display featuring non-photosensitive images, fast speech synthesis and a digital camera module. Not all of these devices are ready to use today, but many of them are already operational.

BubLuv is a concept design by Michael Geedrick, a student of Queensland University of Technology, which is a monitoring device that can help parents to reduce the incidents on Sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS amongst infants. BubLuve monitors the children when they are sleeping and alerts the parents if any serious respiratory situation occurs.

BubLuv is designed in a way that can measure carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations of the child during the sleep cycles of the infants. Later on, this device interprets these data to find out the exact situation and relay to the parents through gentle glowing signals.

Boomer, an excellent tool that provides mobility aid to the quickly increasing elderly population. Boomer is emphasizing most on safety and aims to diminish the risk of stair-related falls, which is an identified major public health concern among the elderly community.

The design key innovation is the stair compatible function to allow mobility aid by transforming from a simple walker into a gadget that facilitates the user to go up and down on the stairs safely. In fact, the Boomer mobility aid is an exceptional combination of user friendly qualities in a modern form.

The boomer mobility aid has a modern, organic, user friendly form and aims to move away from this stigma and create a new modern aesthetic for elderly mobility aids.

Dental treatment has remarkably developed during the last few years but it is really a complex situation when it comes with treating a patient who is not able to come to the dentist’s chamber.

Dentris is designed by Clemens Auer from Vienna, Austria which is the first mobile cart for dental treatments that deals with the special conditions such as home-care patients. With the growing number of such patients, Dentris will surely become a helping hand for mobile dentists which will allow direct bed treatment.

The local environment of the bed-ridden patients site and assures the patient as well as the dentist the most possible optimized and hassle-free dental treatment at home.

Features:

DENTRIS offers new chances for people in home-care and dentistry. Society is aging, more and more bed-ridden / people are in need of care and because of the improved hygiene of last decades more and more elderly people keep their own teeth. DENTRIS helps the prevention / avoiding of expensive follow-up therapies as well as reducing costs of outgoing transport / return transport

DENTRIS helps avoiding strenuous transport (bed-ridden people often with tattered cardiovascular system) from home to practice and finally avoids possibly degrading situations for patients (while moving, in practice).

Gruve:Personal Energy Burning Monitoring System

Devices that assess power consumption of a house are very much familiar with us. But how many of you have seen a device that measures your body surrounding

power consumption?

gruve1gruve2

Worrell is a design firm based on Minnesota has designed such a device named Gruve which is a personal energy-burning monitoring system based on Dr Jim Levine’s research. He discovered that it is possible to lose unnecessary weight by being active all through the day which will shut the metabolism down. Gruve is a tri-axial accelerometer that can indicate the progress of an individual against his or her pre-measured metabolism by monitoring the individual’s every movement all through the day.

Prosthetic Limbs

One of the best innovations that has happened is the invention of prosthetic limbs which has given a new dimensions and hope to those who have lost their limbs due to an accident or other reasons. Today advances in the medical field have ensured that these extensions look very much like the human skin. But that’s also a disadvantage to look at as some may feel reveled by touching it, hence immaculate is a concept that ensures that it is as much a part of the body as it is connected to the central nervous system and responds to desired actions. A nice and humane innovation must say.

As of today prosthetics are technological skeletons covered in silicone. They imitate the look of a natural arm perfectly, but as soon as someone touches it one realize it’s a prosthetic. The consequence is then a phenomenon researchers call “The Uncanny Valley”, whereas something is so lifelike the realization of it being artificial leads to shock and revulsion.

To avoid this, and to promote the interests of the prosthetic users I want to apply the same philosophy used in eyewear. These support products have gone from being purely functional to become objects of fashion and identity. Furthermore it turns it into an object of beauty instead of a technological object masquerading as a natural arm.
